Dr. Subir Gokarn Director, Research

Dr. Subir Gokarn is the Director of Research at the Brookings Institution India Center. His current research interests include policy options in health, education and financial inclusion. He also comments regularly on contemporary global and domestic economic issues. 

Prior to this, he was Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (2009-12), where he oversaw Monetary Policy, Research, Financial Markets, Communications and Deposit Insurance, and represented the Reserve Bank at the G-20 Deputies’ forum. Earlier, he was Chief Economist of Standard & Poor’s Asia-Pacific (2007-09), Executive Director and Chief Economist of CRISIL (2002-07), Chief Economist at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi (2000-2002) and Associate Professor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai (1991-2000). He received a doctorate in Economics from Case Western Reserve University, USA in 1989.

He was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship in 1997, on which he spent an academic year at the Economic Growth Center at Yale University, USA. He contributes a fortnightly column on current economic issues to the Business Standard, a leading financial daily of India, which he had done for 13 years before joining the Reserve Bank of India. Besides this, he has regularly participated in committees and other activities of industry associations, academic institutions, government agencies and civil society organizations. He is currently serving a two-year term as member of the National Security Advisory Board.

He has been appointed Member, Expenditure Management Commission by the Government of India. The Commission will submit its first report before the 2015 - 2016 union budget. He has also recently been appointed chairman of a task force that will set up a Financial Data Management Centre.  The FDMC is envisaged as a comprehensive depository of all financial sector data in regulatory domains.
